The Pet Rock Is Back: Why We Still Love Our Tiny Rock Friends

There is something objectively funny about giving a rock a personality.

It doesn't move. It doesn't make noise. It doesn't need to be fed. And yet, put two tiny eyes on it, give it a spot on your desk, and somehow it stops feeling like just a rock.

That's probably part of why the Pet Rock became such an unlikely phenomenon in the first place.

Wait... people really bought pet rocks?

They absolutely did.

The original Pet Rock was created by advertising executive Gary Dahl in 1975 after joking with friends about the perfect pet—one that didn't need feeding, walking, grooming, or cleaning up after.

Dahl turned the joke into an actual product. Ordinary rocks were packaged inside little cardboard carrying cases complete with air holes and bedding, along with a humorous owner's manual explaining how to care for and train your new pet.

The idea was wonderfully absurd.

And people loved it.

For a brief period in the 1970s, Pet Rocks became a genuine pop-culture craze, with more than a million reportedly sold.

So why is a rock still charming 50 years later?

Maybe because not everything we own has to accomplish something.

Our desks are already filled with useful things—computers, chargers, notebooks, calendars and phones. Sometimes it's nice to have one tiny thing sitting there for no other reason than because looking at it makes you smile.

That's how we think about our little rock friends at Zuerbell.

They're not quite decorations and they're definitely not very demanding pets. They're just tiny companions that can sit beside your keyboard, live on a bookshelf, watch over your plants or silently judge you while you're working.

Meet the Crystal Cloud Friends

When we found these little guys, they immediately felt like something that belonged at Zuerbell.

Each Crystal Cloud Friend is made from natural stone, so the colors, patterns and little imperfections can vary from one to another. Their tiny black obsidian eyes give each stone just enough personality without taking away from the natural beauty of the crystal.

And that's probably our favorite thing about them.

No two feel exactly the same.

Put one beside your monitor and suddenly it's your coworker.

Put one next to a plant and apparently it lives there now.

Put several together and you've somehow started a rock family.

We don't make the rules.

The easiest pet you'll ever have

A Crystal Cloud Friend won't wake you up at 5 a.m.

It won't scratch your furniture.

It won't steal your food.

It won't leave hair everywhere.

It won't complain when you're late getting home.

Mostly, it just sits there.

10/10 pet behavior.

Sometimes joy really is that small

We started Zuerbell around a pretty simple idea: joy doesn't always have to come from something big.

Sometimes it's a tiny charm hanging from your bag. Sometimes it's a sticker that makes your laptop feel more like yours. And sometimes, apparently, it's a little rock with two eyes staring at you from the corner of your desk.

We're okay with that.

Little joys for every soul.
